My first job was in a residential care home taking care of the elderly. My employer’s legal obligations for me to work included getting a Criminal Record Check (CRB) currently known as “The Disclosure and Barring Service” (DBS) before I could start working. This was important at that time at the start of my career as it is now as explained by GOV.UK (2018) who state that, “The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) helps employers make safer recruitment decisions and prevent unsuitable people from working with vulnerable groups, including children.” My employer also had to check my identity, my ‘National Insurance’ number and also get some professional and character references to see if I would be able to work for them.
