Marjane Satrapi’s use of images throughout the story enhances her ability to convey many aspects of the character and plot. Satrapi can convey more of her characters emotions and thoughts than she would have been able to with pure text. The use of images is valid for use while teaching as the plot is still mature and requires close reading.
Satrapi’s emotions are conveyed with greater depth and impact with the use of images. She can show emotions in multiple methods giving the true nature of herself and the situation. Satrapi also provides a clear focus of the peoples’ emotions in situations with multiple people. Marjane portrays this when she said, “You know, in Iran we don’t celebrate Christmas…” (168). She can then show in the next panel how her friends’ reactions were different from hers through the facial expressions.
These expressions are also be used to enhance the relationships between the characters.
