It is critical to have an understanding in how to address power differences to ensure they do not interfere with communication and supervision practices. Communication is critical for guiding the staff in the direction of the organisational plans and ensuring they adhere to best practices. Addressing this power balance involves being aware of how power can be inadvertently projected through body language and words and how they are said. To establish mutual trust, integrity and respect, managers need to allow their staff to freely communicate thoughts and feelings, seek clarification on issues and ask for help. Managers will also need to take responsibility for their own unfavourable decisions and not blame them on others, which allow managers to take charge and guide staff with fairness. If this was not the case, manager biases can result in distrust, anger and dysfunctional performance.
