Introduction

As the size of the network grows for a small-to-medium sized business, the management involved in network maintenance grows. The Focus was on managing VLAN information in a single switch. But What if you have a lot of switches to manage? How will you manage the distributed VLAN database on many switches?

VTP Overview
The VTP allows a network manager to make changes to a switch that is configured with the VTP server. Basically, the VTP server distributions and synchronizes VLAN information VTP-enabled patches across the switched network, reducing problems caused by incorrect settings and configuration inconsistencies. The VTP stores VLAN configurations in the VLAN database, called VLAN. Dat

Benefits of VTP
VTP maintains VLAN configuration consistency by managing the addition, exclusion, and renaming of VLANs across multiple CISCO switches on a network. VTP offers benefits for network managers

There are some major components VTP.

VTP Domain
-consists of one or more interconnected switches. ALL switches in a domain share VLAN configuration details using VTP ads. A router or a Level 3 switch sets the boundary of each domain.

VTP’s Ads
-VTP uses an ad hierarchy to distribute and synchronize VLAN configuration over the network.

VTP modes
-A switch can be configured in three modes: server, transparent client.

VTP Server
-VTP Servers announce the VLAN information of the VTP domain for other VTP-enabled switches in that domain. VTP servers store VLAN information for the entire domain in NVRAM (non-volatile RAM). The server is where VLANs can be created, deleted, or renamed to the domain.

VTP Customer
-VTP clients work the same way as VTP servers, but cannot create, change, or delete VLANs on a VTP client. A VTP Client Stores VLAN information for the entire domain while the switch is active. IF A switch is reset, VLAN information will be excluded. You return the VTP client mode to a switch.

Transparent VTP
-Switches in transparent mode send ads VTP VTP clients and VTP servers. Switches in transparent mode do not participate in the VTP. The VLANs that are created, change the name or exclude on switches in transparent mode are only valid for this switch.

VTP Cut
-The VTP cut increases the available bandwidth on the network by restricted flooded traffic to the backbone links that traffic should use to reach the target devices. Without cutting VTP, a switch floods the broadcast, multicast, and unknown unicast traffic for all the backbone links within a VTP domain even if the receive switches discard it.

Completo VTP domains

VTP allows you to separate your network into smaller domains to help management manage VLAN management. An additional advantage of configuring VTP domains is that it limits the extension in which configuration changes are propagated on the network if a errorocor. The figure shows a network with two VTP domains: Cisco2 and Cisco3. In this chapter, the three switches, S1, S2, and S3 will be configured for VTP. A VTP domain consists of switches or several interconnected switches that share the same VTP domain name. Later in this chapter, you will learn how the allowed switches for VTP acquire a common domain name. To switch can be a member of a VTP domain at a time. Until you specify the domain name VTP, you will not be able to create or modify the VLANs on VTP server, and the VLAN information is not

VTP modes

Cisco switch, configured with Cisco Cisco Software, can be configured in the server mode, client, or transparent. These modes differ in how they are used to manage and announce VLAN and VTP domains.

Server mode

In server mode, you can create, modify, and delete VLANs for the entire VTP domain. The VTP modulator is the standard mode for a CISCO switch. VTP servers advertise their VLAN configurations to other switches in the same VTP and domain synchronize their VLAN configurations with other switches based on the ads received on backbone links. VTP servers keep track of updates through a configuration review number. Other switches in the same VTP domain compared their revision numbers to the revision number received from a VTP configuration server to see if they needed
Synchronize your VLAN database.

Client mode

If switch is in client mode, you cannot create, change, or delete VLANs. In addition, the VLAN configuration information that a VTP client switch receives from a VTP Server switch is stored in a VLAN database, not NVRAM. Tips, VTP customers require less memory than VTP servers. When the VTP client is disconnected and restarted, it sends a request notice to a VTP server for updated VLAN configuration information. The switches configured as VTP clients are most frequently found in larger networks, because in to network with hundreds of switches it is more difficult to coordinate the improvements spills. Often there are many network administrators working at different times of the day. There are only some switches that are physically able to maintain the settings of VLAN makes it easy to control VLAN updates and helps monitor which network administrators have run. For large networks, in client mode it is also more economical. By default, all servers are configured as VTP servers. This configuration is suitable for networks in which the size of the VLAN information is small and the information is easily stored in NVRAM on the switches. On a large network with hundreds of deswitches, the network administrator must decide whether the cost of purchasing switches with NVRAM sufficient to store the duplicate VLAN information is very high. An administrator realizes cost can choose to configure some few well-equipped switches with VTP servers, using less memory with switches as VTP clients. Although a discussion of network redundancy is beyond the scope of this course, be aware that the number of VTP servers must be chosen in order to provide the desired degree of redundancy in the network.

Transparent mode

The switches configured in transparent mode forward VTP the ads that receive trunk packaging to other network switches. Completo VTP Transparent mode switches do not advertise your VLAN configuration and do not synchronize your VLAN configuration with another switch. Set up to VTP transparent mode switch when you have local-importance VLAN configurations and should not be shared with network orthoses. In transparent mode, VLAN settings are saved in NVRAM (but not announced to other switches) settings are available after the switch is restarted. This means that when you restart to switch in VTP transparent mode, you do not see a standard VTP server mode again, but it remains in VTP transparent mode.

Summary
We’ve discussed the VLAN protocol crossover. The VTP is a CISCO protocol used to Exchange VLAN information through links, reducing backbone VLAN management and configuration errors. VTP allows you to create a VLAN when it is within a VTP domain and has this VLAN propagated to all other switches in the Dominion. There are three modes of operation of VTP: server, client and transparent. Switches in the VTP Modality are predominant in large networks, where their definition reduces the management of VLAN information. In small networks, network administrators can more frequently monitor network changes; In this way, the switches are often left in the VTP standard module. VTP cut limits the unnecessary propagation of VLAN traffic over a local network. The VTPdetermina which trunk ports route to certain VLAN traffic. VTP cutting improves overall network performance by restricting unnecessary traffic flooding through trunk cut links allows only VLAN traffic to VLANs that are mapped to some of the switch port at the other end of a trunk link. It reduces the total amount of flooded traffic network, the bandwidth is released to other traffic
