Dictionary.com defines race as “a socially constructed category of identification based on physical characteristics, ancestry, historical affiliation, or shared culture”, this authorises segregation and invites unnecessary obstacles that groups deemed too “different” must face in order to live their lives with pride, dignity, and to achieve some form of fulfilment. This is the scenario the Youngers find themselves in as they fight amongst themselves on how their aspirations should be achieved through the help of a ten thousand-dollar cheque which Lena is expected to receive as compensation for her husband’s death. This provides the audience with the understanding of exactly how badly racism has affected the Younger family, i.e. due to the limited amount of resources Black Americans had to fight against their own in order to secure their aspirations. This event in the play also marks the beginning of the disintegration of the Younger’s sense of family unity.
